Pam, the sheriff and border patrol

Good ride today. 60 miles which puts us over 1000 miles of cycling so far! (See the KK mileage total above). At some point in our ride today we turned north. The road was long and deserted. There were a lot of Sheriffs and Border Patrol. Pam SAGed us at 30 miles and then every 10 miles. This is for safety (no cell service) and to provide a respite from the sun. At our 40 mile meet up she had a story. She had been pulled over by 5 sheriff and BP cars. Apparently this road is considered a high crime area shared by the cartel and ranchers. They inspected the car, heard her story and let her go. The Florida tags had caught their attention. We are staying the night at an amazing cabin in Vanderpool, TX called Peace of Heaven. Top picture is dinner on the porch of the cabin tonight.

  2. Gosh, glad the sheriff and border patrol gave you guys a heads up. Hope you are past the danger area. I am sure you were all glad to get to your Peace of Heaven! AND congratulations on 1000 miles. WOW that is a huge accomplishment!

  3. What does SAG mean? Seems like riding solo, as opposed to a whole bike touring group, has some added encounters with law enforcement. Love the porch shot...and always Finn!

    1. SAG is providing support to cyclists. She has cold drinks and provides a shady spot to rest.

Tomorrow we finish and lose our super human metabolism.

We had two great trails to ride on today. What a treat to get off the busy highways. It has been quite the odyssey to get here. Amy is a rock. Pam has been the most amazing blessing to us. She has served us better than we deserve. When you get up early everyday and ride lots of miles, you are grouchy. She has been our logistics expert. I have had two ladies and a dog put up with my crap for 7 weeks. I am humbled and undeserving. Thanks to Amy for the tireless planning and riding. Almost home!

In Gulf Shores, AL tonight.

It took about 30 minutes to exit Mississippi this morning. We dodged the rain until our last 30 minutes of the ride today. Made the 9:30am ferry across Mobile Bay. It costs $12 to take a tandem bike across in case you need to know that some time. The ferry saves us close to 70 miles. Lots of damage still in the gulf shore beach area. Rode a nice bike trail for several miles. Contemplating a trip to Lambert’s for dinner and a visit to Buccee’s.

In Gainesville. Two days left.
