Flat tires, fat climbs and spell check

Hard day of climbs. However, I am surrounded by two women who show me much grace. Amy and Pam have been amazing. Sometimes I am so driven to accomplish something I lose sight of the bigger picture. You see many beautiful sights here but I am so busy trying to stay on schedule and get the miles in that I make it miserable. I knew this ride would teach me many things and it is. This is an amazing country filled with great people. I don’t want to miss the important stuff as we make the trip. Time to add a bit more fun and appreciate the people around me who put their lives on hold to help me chase my dream. From one messed-up guy with sore legs and sun burn.

  1. It is a privilege to be on this journey with you.

  2. Roosevelt Lake is both challenging and inspiring. Your photos are great. I sent Pam a photo of the bridge from a different angle. Bicycle rides bring out the best in us and remind us to pay attention to what is going on around us. God bless.

  4. Joel, it certainly is a balancing act. Add to that the fact that you are transitioning from a dynamic career to retirement, it may take a minute to shift your gears. AND you noticed this early in the trip. Great job!

Tomorrow we finish and lose our super human metabolism.

We had two great trails to ride on today. What a treat to get off the busy highways. It has been quite the odyssey to get here. Amy is a rock. Pam has been the most amazing blessing to us. She has served us better than we deserve. When you get up early everyday and ride lots of miles, you are grouchy. She has been our logistics expert. I have had two ladies and a dog put up with my crap for 7 weeks. I am humbled and undeserving. Thanks to Amy for the tireless planning and riding. Almost home!

In Gulf Shores, AL tonight.

It took about 30 minutes to exit Mississippi this morning. We dodged the rain until our last 30 minutes of the ride today. Made the 9:30am ferry across Mobile Bay. It costs $12 to take a tandem bike across in case you need to know that some time. The ferry saves us close to 70 miles. Lots of damage still in the gulf shore beach area. Rode a nice bike trail for several miles. Contemplating a trip to Lambert’s for dinner and a visit to Buccee’s.

In Gainesville. Two days left.
