Route adjustments and disclaimer

On our first day climbing into the California mountains I suffered some degree of heatstroke and got a nasty sunburn. From that point on I decided to make reasonable modifications to our daily ride. The intent was to still ride across the USA, but make accommodations as I saw fit. Our KK mileage is our accurate cycling mileage to date but is less than the route. Today we woke up to temps in the mid 30s. We won’t get a normal ride in but will advance to our next stop to stay on schedule. If you have been tracking our daily ride you would have noticed our route changes. Amy poured herself into the schedule and is not advocate of my changes but supports me. The reason this post reads I, I, I is that this was my decision. In order to stay the course I pushed  for these changes. When we arrive in St. Augustine, FL our overall mileage will be less than the official route.

  1. Every true adventure has challenges to overcome. I’m glad the three (four counting Head of Security) of you are sharing it together. The trials will make the eventual triumph even more incredible. GO TEAM GO!!!!!!

  2. Joel is simply using his years of work experience adapting to constant change to keep the plan in place!!!! Minor detour to major goal and I will say that steak house you described may be worth back tracking to!

  3. “Adapt the map.”
Good on you both. Every plan is a combination of informed speculation and wishful thinking!

  4. You have already done an amazing job. Doing so well, no one will ever argue with someone who has taken on such a great trip with some very thoughtful action. So proud of everything you've done and are going to do. Keep on biking, you're doing great things.

  5. Honestly, I don’t think any one following your journey will audit the miles or question the 4 of you! LOL I am so impressed that you have not only taken on this bucket list challenge, but you are adapting, moving and grooving! 😉

Tomorrow we finish and lose our super human metabolism.

We had two great trails to ride on today. What a treat to get off the busy highways. It has been quite the odyssey to get here. Amy is a rock. Pam has been the most amazing blessing to us. She has served us better than we deserve. When you get up early everyday and ride lots of miles, you are grouchy. She has been our logistics expert. I have had two ladies and a dog put up with my crap for 7 weeks. I am humbled and undeserving. Thanks to Amy for the tireless planning and riding. Almost home!

In Gulf Shores, AL tonight.

It took about 30 minutes to exit Mississippi this morning. We dodged the rain until our last 30 minutes of the ride today. Made the 9:30am ferry across Mobile Bay. It costs $12 to take a tandem bike across in case you need to know that some time. The ferry saves us close to 70 miles. Lots of damage still in the gulf shore beach area. Rode a nice bike trail for several miles. Contemplating a trip to Lambert’s for dinner and a visit to Buccee’s.

In Gainesville. Two days left.
